IRS CP14: Balance Due

Act soon

← All IRS letters

What this letter means

Your first bill. The IRS says you owe tax, penalties, or interest for the year shown.

Why you probably got it

You filed a return but did not pay the full amount, or the IRS adjusted your return and a balance is left.

Your deadline

Pay by the date on the notice, usually about 21 days, to stop more interest and penalties.

What to do next

  1. Check the tax year and amount against your own records and return.
  2. If it is right and you can pay, pay online at IRS.gov/payments.
  3. If you cannot pay in full, ask for a payment plan before the due date.
  4. If you think it is wrong, call the number on the notice and keep a record of the call.
Scam check: The IRS starts contact by mail. It will never demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, or threaten immediate arrest. Pay only at IRS.gov or by check to the U.S. Treasury, and confirm any phone number at IRS.gov before calling.

This is general information, not legal, tax, or financial advice for your specific situation. Every case is different. Always check the dates and amounts printed on your own documents.
