What this letter means
The income or payments reported to the IRS by employers, banks, or others do not match your return. The IRS proposes changes.
Why you probably got it
A W-2, 1099, or other form shows income you did not report, or amounts differ.
Your deadline
Respond by the date on the notice, usually about 30 days. This is not a bill yet, but it becomes one if you do not respond.
What to do next
- Compare every item on the notice with your own records.
- If you agree, sign and return the response form and pay or set up a plan.
- If you disagree, send a signed statement and copies of your proof.
- If you need more time, call before the deadline and ask for an extension.
Scam check: The IRS starts contact by mail. It will never demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, or threaten immediate arrest. Pay only at IRS.gov or by check to the U.S. Treasury, and confirm any phone number at IRS.gov before calling.
This is general information, not legal, tax, or financial advice for your specific situation. Every case is different. Always check the dates and amounts printed on your own documents.
