IRS CP23: Estimated Payments Did Not Match

Act soon

← All IRS letters

What this letter means

The estimated tax payments the IRS has on file are different from what you claimed, and you owe.

Why you probably got it

A payment was missed, applied to a different year, or entered wrong.

Your deadline

Pay or respond by the date on the notice.

What to do next

  1. Pull your bank records for each estimated payment.
  2. If the IRS missed a payment, send proof.
  3. If not, pay the balance or set up a plan.
Scam check: The IRS starts contact by mail. It will never demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, or threaten immediate arrest. Pay only at IRS.gov or by check to the U.S. Treasury, and confirm any phone number at IRS.gov before calling.

This is general information, not legal, tax, or financial advice for your specific situation. Every case is different. Always check the dates and amounts printed on your own documents.
